The Hilda Willing
In 1980 I began a keen interest in the skipjacks of the Chesapeake Bay. At that time there were as many as thirty boats working the bay dredging for oysters. Today there are only about six. Often I would go to Tilghman Island and do sketches of the boats as they came to the dock after a day’s work. The boat I saw most was the skipjack named “Hilda Willing”. I drew it and painted it often and, strangely enough, the paintings sold very well in Fairfield County, Connecticut. They seemed to like boats of any kind. I have always liked the skipjacks, but they are gradually disappearing from our bay.
