"The Palio di Siena" Parade

What comes to my mind about this painting is neighborhood pride. This man is so proud to wear these clothes…these colors…in the tradition of hundreds and hundreds of years. The age old tradition of the Contrada will culminate in the Palio in the Compo in Siena. There's a horse race where a representative from each neighborhood (or contrada) competes to be winner. Prior to this, there are parades through Siena up and down the narrow streets with drums playing and flags twirling and thrown. This tradition started during the Renaissance and continues today.
